Manga for Your Mobile on vSNAX!January 1, 2009 By Todd Hanlon Anime Networks and Gong have teamed up with Rhythm NewMedia to deliver animated videos to iPhones near you! The application vSNAX is offered as freeware on Apple devices. Each clip plays for 3-5 minutes, with content updated throughout the day. vSNAX is much different than YouTube, because network channels rather than individual users maintain content. The new application is like a small television with over 25 premium media partners. The Anime! channel includes network titles such as Azumanga Daioh, Saiyuki and Mythical Detective Loki. Higher connection speeds with 3G networks surely deliver the best content, but with regular Wi-Fi, clips were uninterrupted and crystal clear. Ujjal Kohli, CEO of Rhythm New Media said in an interview that in the past six months, the freeware has had 250,000 users. He discussed how the service is ad driven by video pre-roll. Ad content varies per user based on which ads have been seen before. At this time Kohli says the network has the capability to send content specific ads based on statistical information regarding viewers, but has not yet implemented the feature in this version of the software. Video ads are interactive with touch screen capabilities linking to external websites. Currently, the network runs ads for Pepsi, Lincoln, and Amp Energy Drinks. One of the best features of vSNAX for iPhone is that manga fans can watch one episode while scrolling through thumbnails of others. Turn the iPhone horizontally to see the main video widescreen, with up next choices at the bottom. Social networking capabilities allow viewers to tap screen to rate clips, and share with friends. Some of vSNAX’s other channels include CBS News, Discovery, Animal Planet, Style Network and Comedy Central. Content ranges from short clips of jokes, latest news headlines, and even a Cheetah killing a gazelle. |
